Dressing up ideas

Fasnacht is certainly the time for dressing up, here are some ideas to add to your childs dressing up box.

Fairy wand

You will need:

An old wooden spoon

Some card (e.g. old cereal packet)

Silver paint or some tin foil.

Glitter or stickers for decorating

Some ribbons or gift wrapping ribbon

How to:

Cut out two large star shapes from the card - they need to be big enough for the centre of the star to completely cover the spoon part of the wooden spoon with a bit of overlap. Staple/glue/tape the two stars together - one on either side of the spoon. Either paint the whole thing silver or cover it in tin foil and then decorate with whatever sparkley or glittery things you have in the house. Tie some ribbons around the neck of the spoon under the star.

Make your own long haired plaits (braids)

You will need:

3 old pairs of tights - they can be holey but should be clean!

Some ribbon

Optional: some wire or and old wire coat hanger

How to:

Cut out the crotch part of the tights so that you are left with two legs and a waistband on each pair - it doesn't matter if this causes a hundred runs in the tights. Arrange the three pairs with the waistbands on top of each other so that the legs are in the same position.

Make a knot in each set of 3 legs so that you have two "pigtails" with 3 legs each (!)

Plait (braid) the pigtails and tie off with the ribbons when they are long enough (cut off the extra).

Wear them on your head with the waistband as a head band - you might need to make the waistband a little smaller to fit on your childs head :-)

If you want to be able to wear your plaits sticking out from your head like horns (!!) then thread some wire through the plaits so that you can mould them in all different kinds of shapes.

Pirate hooks

You wlll need:

An old sock (preferably black or other pirate-esque colour)

Some heavy duty cardboard

Silver or gold or black paint (only one of these!)

How to:

Cut a hook shape from the card with a base and handle - it should look like a ? with a horizontal line through half way up. The card needs to be really quite strong so if you need to, cut out several and glue them togther for extra strength. Paint the hook silver (black or gold also works if you don't have silver). Make a hole in the end of the sock. Post the hook through the sock point first so that the handle is inside the sock and the hook outside. Put your hand inside the sock and hold the handle to "use" the hook.
