Breastfeeding
BCT Breastfeeding Most of us would agree that breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby. For some women and babies breastfeeding comes very easily, for some it takes a little practice and for yet others it can be something of a rocky road. A lot of women need some help to get started with breastfeeding – and the good news is that in the Basel area there is a lot of help and support available to you.

All the hospitals and birth houses in the Basel area are pro-breastfeeding, encouraging and helping women to get started and supporting them through any difficulties that may arise. If you have a baby in Basel you will generally see a specialist breastfeeding counsellor during your hospital stay or soon afterwards at home and there are also breastfeeding groups run by professional consultants that you can go to.

When you leave hospital you would normally be offered a prescription for 3 visits from a breastfeeding counsellor after you go home. Even if you think you won’t need it, it’s worth taking the prescription just in case things go wrong when you go home. These visits are paid for by your insurance. If you need more visits then you may need to pay for that depending on your insurance.

In the Basel area there are many Breastfeeding consultants that speak English. For a list of all IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) see the following website:

There are also many resources available on the internet about breastfeeding – have a look at those listed on our links page.
